Yorkshire Terrier Grooming: How To Take Care Of Your Yorkie

by Susan Bailey

Yorkies are wonderful dogs, but if you want them to look and feel their very best, then Yorkshire Terrier grooming is going to be an important part of their life. Grooming needs to be performed regularly on these dogs, primarily because of the length of their fur and how low they are to the ground. Their small stature results in them getting dirty more quickly than other breeds of dog.

This in turn is going to largely affect how they interact with other dogs as well as with people, and so it is a significant part of raising them in general. It is a very good idea to introduce or socialize your dog to professional grooming at a very early age, so that they become used to it and learn to actually enjoy it rather than dread it. Also remember that grooming a Yorkshire Terrier really depends on whether you have a pet or show quality Yorkie as this will determine how frequently you are going to have to groom them.

Bathing is a very important part of Yorkshire Terrier grooming. Especially if you keep their coat long, you are going to want to bathe your Yorkie on a regular basis. At least once every two weeks is a good idea. When bathing your Yorkie you want to make sure that you use soap and warm water and make sure that you do not get soap in their eyes. The best idea is to use a shampoo that is specifically designed to be gentle on the eyes just in case you do accidentally get a bit in their eyes.

For instance, if you have noticed that your dog has a lot of dry skin or dander, you are going to want to find a shampoo that will moisturize. On the other hand if their coat tends to get oily, you will want to use a shampoo that is not going to add even more oil.

Whether you show your Yorkie and must maintain the beautiful long coat or you give your pet a Yorkshire Terrier hair cut, the bottom line is that Yorkies are dogs that need proper and regular grooming.

The importance of grooming your dog really cannot be stressed enough. Whether it is Yorkshire Terrier grooming that you have to worry about or the grooming of another breed of dog, it is vital that you keep them looking their very best. Whether you show your Yorkie and must maintain the beautiful long coat or you give your pet a Yorkshire Terrier hair cut can make a great deal of difference in grooming time.

Their hair, nails, teeth and gums must also be cleaned and maintained, as this will also have a significant impact on their confidence and self esteem.

If you want your beloved pet to live as long and healthy a life as possible then it is important you keep up with their grooming routine. The best idea is to keep a calendar so that you can keep track of the grooming that needs to be performed on your dog and when. This way you will have a reminder and will not forget and lose track. If you are lazy or just very busy and cannot find the time, then you do always have the option of bringing your dog into the veterinarian and have them do the work for you.
