How Does A Basic Retirement Calculator Work?

by William Blake

A basic retirement calculator is a program you can find for free on the internet that will take your current retirement savings information, let you factor in things that will affect the final number, and then tells you how much more you need to save to be able to retire at the level you want to retire at.

Many people do not understand what a basic retirement calculator is telling them and they do not understand how it gets the numbers it spews back out at them. A basic retirement calculator is a guessing machine that takes current conditions, puts a huge guess for future trends on the current conditions, and then it tells you that there is no way you will be able to retire.

What the calculator does is determine what your standard of living is costing you now and tries to predict what that same standard of living will cost you at the time you are ready to retire.

The basic retirement calculator will even go so far as to tell you how much per month that $4,000 in 2007 needs to be to give you an equivalent lifestyle in 2027. The whole thing is a huge guessing game and the basic retirement calculator is just a tool the financial advisor uses to scare you into giving them as much of your disposable income as you think you can part with and then some.

Some people are discouraged by the economy and its instability over the years. They feel that it may be better to enjoy what you have today and not even bother worrying about what tomorrow will bring.

Can We Predict the Future?

There was a major stock market crash that affected millions of people in the 1920’s, the 1970’s, the 1980’s, and the 2000’s. Millions of people lost their life savings and the first generation that tried the “saving for retirement” game lost everything in early 2000. To put the rise of the cost of living in real life terms a new car in 1940 cost between $600 and $700.

Today, only 60 years later, that price has gone up over 2,700% to over $16,000 for a new car. So when you put an inflation percentage of 4% or 5% a year you are really not being honest with yourself. Between 1979 and 2000 the average American salary only went up by 11.5 cents per hour per year. A basic retirement calculator doesn’t take that into account either.

Steer Clear of These 8 Faux Finish Mistakes While Painting

by Debra That Painter Lady Conrad

Faux painting is deceptively simple once you’ve got the hang of it. There are some basic errors that beginners often make that are worth noting if you want to achieve the results you’re dreaming of.

1. Poor materials yield poor results. With the right brushes and paint and importantly, a properly prepared surface, you will be well on the way to achieving the look you want. A surface painted with flat paint will not give you good results and subsequent layers will dry too fast to allow you to attend to mistakes.

To ensure a good result, use a satin or eggshell paint as your base layer. Flat paint inhibits the slow drying that faux painting requires and somehow creates a dull finish. A base coat that dries slowly will also give you time to fix mistakes.

2. You may be tempted by artist’s palettes and specially designed sponges and applicators. Save your money for good paints and brushes. Gadgets and special tools aren’t necessary. A soft sponge sold for household cleaning will do for applying color washes and an ice cube tray doubles as a practical paint palette.

You can save yourself heaps by using common sense. Dishwashing liquid cuts grease and will even clean some oil-based paints (such as cream stencils), not only water-based paints. Leftover paint can be frozen rather than being left to dry out and hence wasted.

3. Proper surface preparation is a priority. That means more than just filling holes and cracks. If you don’t want an uneven finish you will need to seal the patches with a water-based sealer before applying further layers. Otherwise your finish will be blotchy. You can mix acrylic paint with the sealer if you don’t have the original paint - you do need to match the original paint color if you don’t want to spoil your finish.

4. You know the saying: oil and water don’t mix. Remember that when painting or suffer the consequences. The resulting curdled slush is not pretty. In short, know your paints and read your labels. Latex paint may sound like it’s oil-based but it’s part-water.

5. Clean conditions help create a neat finish. This applies especially to your brushes, which need to be thoroughly cleaned. If you don’t clean them properly you may end up with streaky paint and strange colors. You don’t need specialist cleaners but just running brushes under the tap is not enough. Cleaning pads for children’s art brushes are available for much less than the professional version.

Paint is designed to spread and spread it will - on shoes and in many other ways too. If you’re working for a client, this is a sure way to ruin your reputation. Accidents do happen, but there are ways of dealing with them. Using water or chemical cleaners on carpets is not advisable, since at best it can spread the paint further. You can try trimming the stain with nail scissors when it has dried. If the worst comes to the worst, a product called Goof Off is a useful remedy.

6. When using glazes, wet is the watchword! You need to finish in one seamless session. That means no bathroom breaks (so go before you start!) or refreshment interludes. Wet and dry edges won’t mix, the dry glaze won’t spread and it will show. Work fast, especially in hot dry climates.

8. It’s not only great artists who have their own style of painting. Your own rhythm and movement when applying paint is distinctive and if two people with different styles work on adjacent areas of wall, the difference can be obvious. Even your own style can alter over a day’s work: when you start flagging, for example. If it’s a team effort, work on different walls (or alternate layers). Your work will be more consistent if each area is completed in a defined session.

ADT Household Security Systems

by Richard May

Video security systems are of use to you whether your intention is to use it at your place of work, or alternatively at your home to protect your personal property and family. The cameras can either be used as evidence if the unthinkable ever happens and your property is broken into, or they can be a very good deterant to stop this from happening.

A standard ADT household security system will normally be composed of certain pieces of equipment. The monitor will be utilized to show images that have been recorded by the security cameras connected to it either using wires or wirelessly.

Note that a security monitor will have a much better screen resolution than a usual home television. Cameras will need to be placed at various locations around the home so that any possible entrance points or weak spots can be monitored for intruders.

These cameras can be connected to the monitors using a hard wire or wirelessly. There are various advantages and disadvantages of both. Also be sure to place the cameras so that they are not blocked by any household objects and be aware of the cameras position when adding new items and furniture to the home.

This may not be needed in the majority of homes. Consider whether you want the cameras to be connected using wires or wirelessly. Using no wires may be more expensive but it will be much easier to fit around your house because you do not need to fit wires around your furniture.

The camera itself is probably the most important part of the entire home security system. For this reason you need to take note of a few points when choosing which cameras to use. ADT security will give you many pointers and tips in looking for a camera.

Before going to buy new cameras, take a walk around your house and decide where you will be needing cameras to be placed. Try to pick out possible entrance points through doors and windows that an intruder may target. Also is there a need for you to have audio input on the camera to record sounds?

The central component in the ADT security system is the coaxial cable which will contain the video images that have been recorded, these images will be transmitted by the cable to the monitor. A switcher will connect together two or more cameras to this central monitor. Also available are slightly more advanced systems which let you connect an alarm into the system too.

Oscillating & Rotary Sewing Machine Systems

by David Trumble

Whether you enjoy repairing sewing machines as a hobby, a job, or your own business, it can be both exciting and challenging. There are so many different models and designs, it can be difficult to keep up.

At first, fixing sewing machines can be an overwhelming task. There are so many different makes, models, and designs to learn. When you look at sewing machines, they may all look alike. As soon as you start taking off the covers, you discover just how different they really are. The hook assembly is one of the things that every sewing machine user should and every technician must understand.

When you look at a sewing machine, one of the first things you need to identify is if the machine has an oscillating or a rotary hook assembly. They do much the same task on your sewing machine, but they do it very differently.

The Rotary Hook Assembly includes a hook that moves in a complete circle round and round. The hook slides behind the needle, and proceeds all the way around the bobbin carrier until it again slides behind the bobbin carrier. Singer sewing machines revolutionized the sewing world with their drop in rotary hook systems.

Where do you put the bobbin on this machine? I could be inserted in front, or top under the needle plate, or on the left end of the machine. If it is a top loading bobbin, the machine is usually a rotary hook machine.

Both the front loading and side loading machines can have either hook system. A good example of the side loading machine is the popular Singer Featherweight. Bernina is famous for their front loading CB oscillating hook system, but they also produce front loading rotary systems.

A rotary hook moves around in a continuous circular motion. An oscillating hook moves back and forth. How can you tell which type of sewing machine hook assembly you have?

If you have any question, answer this. Does the hook move back and forth (Oscillating Hook) or in a complete circle (Rotary Hook)?

An oscillating hook starts out with its point up and just to the left of the needle as the needle moves down. When the needle starts up again, the hook slides behind the needle to pick up the thread from the needle. The scarf is a cut out area of the needle just above the eye which helps the thread form a loop making it easy for the point of the hook to grab the thread. The needle continues moving up while the point of hook continues moving in a half circle to the bottom. At the bottom the thread slides off the hook, and the hook makes its swing back to its starting point for the next stitch.

Both systems do essentially the same thing. As the point of the hook passes behind the needle, it is positioned slightly higher than the eye of the needle. The upward travel of the needle causes a small loop of thread to form on the back side of the needle above the eye and amplified by a space called the scarf which is cut out above the eye. The point of the hook snags the thread from behind the needle and pulls it around the bobbin thread. As the needle rises, the threads are tightened into a lockstitch.

The movement and positioning of the hook and needle must coordinate exactly. Slight variations result in skipped stitches, poorly formed stitches, or no stitches at all. The hook and needle travel through a finite pattern. For each stitch the hook and needle must align perfectly. As the needle rises, the loop must form on the back of the needle. The point of the hook must travel to precisely the right position and at the right moment for the hook to snag the upper thread. This is called Hook Needle Timing.

There are several ways to adjust the hook needle timing depending on the sewing machine. Some adjust the position of two interlocking gears immediately below the hook. Some must be adjusted at the right side of the lower shaft where the lower shaft joins the vertical shaft. Some must be adjusted by adjusting a timing belt. In all cases, the key is to cause the needle and hook to meet at the right time in the right way and form stitches.

The more you learn about how sewing machines work and how to repair them, the more sewing machine repair you can do. Just think there are millions of sewing machines just waiting to be serviced by somebody. You could be that somebody.

Product Review of Panasonic EP-1272 Massage Chair

by Steve Esquire

We will take a look at the EP-1272 which is part of the Real Pro Elite series of massage chair by Panasonic. The EP 1272 is a mid range shiatsu massage recliner with advanced massage therapy features. We will review some of the main features and touch on the warranty coverage as well. Here is our evaluation and review of the EP 1272 shiatsu massage recliner.

One of the important aspects of the purchase is your long term protection. The warranty coverage is designed to remove the longer term risk from the purchase. Let us take a look at what Panasonic offers with the EP-1272. This model comes with 3 years parts and 1 year labor. Labor is only available at authorized outlets which is not too convenient. Panasonic now offers in home service, but does not include it with this model. We find this warranty under par for the rest of the industry.

There are some interesting features on the EP 1272. Some of the more important are the 4 one-touch automatic programs, 8 manual massage techniques and the 3 manual back courses. There is also effective lower body coverage to target the feet and calves.

Choose from the 4 one touch programs for your convenience. These one touch programs include Swedish, shiatsu, stretch and quick. Swedish targets the loosening of the back, neck and shoulders with long strokes, circular motions and other rhythmic movements. Shiatsu stimulates the back, neck and shoulders with a soft, deep rubbing motion and tapping actions. Stretch will use rolling, pressing, shiatsu and kneading massages to target the back and shoulders. Quick gives a fast overall massage with emphasis on the back, neck and shoulders for a relieving massage.

This massage recliner comes equipped with 8 manual massage treatments. Select from kneading, compression, Swedish, Hawaiian, soft shiatsu, tapping, regional rolling and full rolling to soothe your tightest muscles. Kneading is great for the neck and shoulders. Compression soothes you into total body relaxation. Swedish targets the back for a thorough loosening. Hawaiian takes the tension out of the lower back region. Soft shiatsu works those knots out of your back and shoulders. Tapping provides invigoration of the muscle groups and tendons. Regional rolling concentrates a press massage along the spine. Full rolling helps by stretching out the back muscles.

If you like to have your feet or calves massaged, then the EP 1272 can provide relief for you. The leg rest has built in air bags to provide a soothing and comforting compression massage. Position the area of your leg and let the EP1272 work out those tight calf muscles. Raise the leg rest more horizontal and place your feet in for a relaxing and relieving foot massage. The EP 1272 is a treat for both your calves and feet.

We like the simple design of the Panasonic remote control. They have certainly set the standard over the years for the industry. The one touch automatic programs are excellent for a full body massage. Need a little customization, then just flip open the hidden panel and select from the eight manual massage treatments. Select exactly the area or pinpoint a specific point to work over in your favorite technique. You can even adjust the roller width and set the massage intensity. This massage recliner is very versatile.

Overall, the Real Pro Elite model EP 1272 is a well designed shiatsu recliner. It comes with an excellent variety of massage therapies and can be effectively targeted to specific regions. The design aesthetics of the chair could have been better along with the warranty. The Panasonic EP 1272 does deliver effective massage therapy, so if you are in the market for a mid range massage chair, then this deserves your serious consideration.

Maintenance Part of Exterior Home Design

by Chad Dethelo

When considering exterior improvements, there are many basic areas that deserve a great deal of attention. There are the major maintenance and repair jobs that need to be done regularly; then there are the more aesthetic, decorative projects that are often more fun and creative.

Exterior projects that require timely maintenance include windowsill, gutter and downspout cleaning. While you are cleaning your windowsills, it is very important to inspect the seals for any leaks. If air is able to either come in or out of your house you are wasting valuable and expensive energy, both in the summer and winter. Water leaking into the house is will damage both your interior and exterior.

Water sitting or draining poorly off of your windowsills can cause immeasurable damage for the windows, not to mention the entire house. If there is water leaking behind the window seal and behind the fascia of the house, you can eventually have very large problems with how structurally sound your house is. Keeping the paint and caulk around your house’s windows fresh will keep many of these problems at bay.

Cleaning the roofs, gutters, eaves and downspouts of a house are another very important part of exterior home maintenance. There are all kinds of available systems to keep the gutters covered, cleaned and free from the larger debris. Downspouts must also be maintained to ensure the rain that falls onto your house runs away from the property. Standing water can be very hazardous to the health of a home’s foundation.

Landscaping is also a very important component to the structural condition as well as the beauty of your home. Again, many yards may need retaining walls and drains in certain places in their yards to wash the water away and keep the home firmly on its foundation. Healthy grass and tree root systems are beneficial to the integrity of the grounds surrounding the home as well. If you have trees that need pruning so they do not fall over or shed branches on to, or worse, in to your home, make sure you take care of this as quickly as possible.

There are many more aspects to landscaping, with many of components adding to what is typically referred to as curb appeal, or what looks good to passers by from the curb. These projects can be more fun and are less necessary, unless you let it go so far the neighbors begin to complain. Landscape architecture has sprung up as a very big business, and many companies specialize in yard maintenance. There are several options, from bushes and flowers, to extensive walkways and fountains. The main focus should be the outdoor elements that make you want to be outside, enjoying your yard.

If you look for all available floor types in the market today, your search would return thousands of results. That’s because the choices on floor types are growing in numbers every passing day. So if you’re feeling a bit daunted by all them, here are a few ones to give you some ideas.

Carpeting comes in many different kinds like wool, nylon and pile. I recommend asking a professional interior designer if you’re thinking about which carpet to choose. For places that get a lot of foot traffic, you can go with durable wool. Berber would be great for family rooms. Price ranges between $15 and $30 per yard.

If you’re looking for sleek designer looks, ceramic tiles are for you. The options for these are also endless. You can have it in all possible sizes and colors. The price for installation are around $8 to $15 per square foot.

Polished concrete is also growing in popularity nowadays. It’s very durable and it’s not very pricey. You can put it in places which get a lot of use and you’ll find it’s easy to maintain. More people are appreciating this great new look for trusty concrete and are loving the choice they made.

Home Improvement Ideas: Polished Concrete

by Alix Montoya

So you’re considering a new theme for your living room but couldn’t think of something revolutionary enough to impress your friends whose floors are as glamorous as the White House’s. The interior designer you hired for the job seemed to be giving ideas too far out for you to even consider. He’s suggesting you stick with concrete. Obviously you think he’s out of his mind. But you know, your interior designer might be on to something.

Concrete has gone far in terms of being just a common building and construction material. People are developing new ways of using cement as a decorative material by itself. And their discoveries are really something to talk about. Not only have they completely changed the boring face of concrete forever, but they also gave new life to those homes stuck with an ugly layer of cement under their feet.

Perhaps the most practical of all these new concrete crazes would be to polish it up. Polished concrete involves grinding the surface of the floor with different materials embedded with bits of diamond to remove the visible blemishes while gradually increasing the strength of the grinder. The result is a beautiful new sheen on your tired old floor. Doubtful? See for yourself.

The possibilities are truly endless. You can also try to put some of the newly emerging concrete pigments that put your color of choice to this old material. You can combine patterns, mix colors, or just build a mosaic of incredible concrete hues to create that floor you’ve always wanted for your home.

There are many available information found on the Internet about the advantages of using these new techniques, in case you’re having second thoughts. If you’re thinking that concrete can be too damp for your taste, then there are ways to solve problems like that too. You can try using vapor barriers to block moisture from getting through. More solutions are easy to find on the Internet.

So what are you waiting for? Contact a contractor now so you can enjoy the new side of this old building material. More and more people are really getting into it and so should you.

What are Wall Decals, Wall Stickers and Clings?

by Melissa Evans

You may be tired of the look of your room or your kids room. You can give it a new appearance and change the wall designs or the wallpaper of their rooms by using wall decals, wall stickers, or clings. You can also choose different wall decals for the rest of the rooms in your entire house.

Wall decals are made of vinyl with adhesive glue at the back of the designs for easy sticking to wall. The materials are especially chosen and combined together to create this kind of wall decal. This is done by pasting the wall decal to the wall using the adhesive glue and the new room appearance is there. If you want to remove it, you can easily do so as well. There will be no residue of glue or any damage to the original paint of the wall after the removal of the wall decal.

Clings are also another kind of decoration but are different from the wall decal and wall stickers because they do not have adhesives. Due to the lack of adhesive windows and mirrors or other glass surfaces are best place to place clings.

Wallpapers are now being replaced by the new designs of wall decals. Aside from its easy to stick characteristics, it has many different designs available in the market. Your kids will have the option of choosing their own room wall decals. As compared to the wallpaper, wall decals do not require too much effort in putting and removing, plus the wall does not have any damages or residue after removal.

Wall decals are known in many different names like wall stickers, room decals, removable wall decals/stickers, vinyl decals/stickers, removable murals, peel and stick, and many more. This has been introduced and suggested to mostly house developers and interior designers in their house furnishing projects. This is more affordable than buying new paints for the wall.

These wall decals and vinyl decals come in different designs like the letters of the alphabet, circles, shapes, animals, cartoon characters, themes, and settings. More colorful and wide varieties of themes and designs are expected to be released soon.

Walls decals and wall stickers are not only for walls of the rooms inside the house. You can also decorate some of your things inside and outside your house. You can put vinyl decals and stickers on your furniture, dresser, book case, kitchen cabinets, mirrors, windows, toy box, laptop, ceilings, bathtubs, school things, or any thing you want to give new appearance and designs. For people who living in a rental home, the landlords would not usually agree to repaint the inner house. These vinyl wall decals and stickers are the right solution for them in their desire to give their rooms a new look.

Why change the wallpaper with these new designs of wall decals? This idea is very good for the room of your kids and toddlers. You can use the designs like the letters of alphabets or the numbers to make your kids familiar with it. You can also use the colorful designs to make your kids livelier and inspired inside their own room.

This wall decals and wall stickers are ideal for bedrooms, childcare play centers, or learning centers for kids inside your house. For a reasonable price of $50, they will be motivated to learn new things and play intelligently if they are surrounded with decorations and wall designs appropriate for their inquisitive minds.

Reinventing new designs and giving your old house that fresh look you desire for your house do not need to be expensive and hard to do. Wall decals and wall stickers are available anywhere especially at the nearest department stores and interior design shopping stores. Feel fresh and inspired with your new wall.
