Home water heating is generally a fair proportion of your monthly energy expenses. Some estimates put it at 30% of the total costs. This can really add up, especially over the colder months. This article will cover a few methods that can save you money on water heating costs.
Traditional home water heaters are powered by electricity or natural gas. The hub of the system is the water tank. It is a large cylindrical metal tank that is probably hidden away somewhere in the garage or basement. Inside the metal casing you will find a glass bottle that has insulation covering it. This is where the hot water is stored. The casing is there to protect the bottle from any mishaps.
At the bottom of the glass bottle will be a gas burner or an electric element. This is how the water is heated. These devices are generally controlled by a thermostat that will switch them on when the water drops to a certain temperature.
This system has a problem in that it will continually reheat water when it drops below a certain temperature.
For example, any water that is not used and sits in the tank will lose some of this heat to the environment. If the system senses that this water is too cold it will start to reheat it again. This will continue throughout the day, using energy and costing you money.
This is the cost of having hot water at the turn of a faucet. Many people think this cost is unnecessary and an inefficient use of energy resources.
The remedy to this problem is to use a tankless hot water heater. This does the same as the traditional hot water system but without storing water in a tank. It provides on demand hot water.
It does this with a device known as a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is heated by an electricity or gas heater (just like the traditional system) but it is only used when water is about to be used.
The water pipes are wound round the heat exchanger. As the water passes through the pipes to the faucet, the heat is transferred to the water giving instant hot water.
You will use less electricity or gas using this type of system because it is only used when needed rather than topping up hot water that may not be used. A tankless system can cost more than the other system but should last longer as it gets less use.
Another option that is gaining popularity and will continue in this way is to add solar power to your heating system. Solar hot water systems are really just the same storage and heating device ” so it could be a tank or tankless water system - but the energy source comes from the Sun rather than via a utility company.
There are two types of solar hot water systems. A passive system probably won’t provide all your energy needs but can augment the use of electricity or gas thus saving you money on utility bills.
The second method is known as an active system. It used solar panels that generate electric current. This can be used to power the entire house, including the heating element in the water heater or the heat exchanger in the tankless water system. Using this method your energy bills would be minimal as the electricity generated would be free.
